Bad Breath
Bad breath (halitosis) remains a taboo in society and yet many of us will suffer from it at some point. For approximately 25% of people, it can unfortunately become a persistent problem – this can lead to issues with self-esteem, relationships and performance at work.
There are many factors that may contribute to bad breath, and the cause isn’t always obvious – however, it is thought that 85% of bad breath can be traced back to bacteria in the oral cavity.
Common causes of bad breath include:
?????? ????????: such gum disease, tooth decay or infections are all potential causes of bad breath!
???????????: bacteria live in the mouth tend to multiply as the mouth dries out.
??? ???? ????: this causes your body to break down fat for energy and create ketones. These are emitted out of the body through urine or your breath – causing ‘ketobreath’ – it smells like rotten fruit!
???????? ?????: this leads to a slowing of the production of saliva – which usually fights bacteria in the mouth. This leads to bacteria can start breeding leading to the onset of bad breath.
??????: this can cause bad breath due its intense flavour as well as reducing saliva production. Less saliva means an increase in odour-causing bacteria.
???? ????? ????: the bacteria that naturally exist in your mouth feed on sugars turning sweet treats in to sour smells
??????? ??????????: such as sinusitis, tonsillitis, diabetes and acid reflux can all result in bad breath
???????????: some medications like some antihistamines, diuretics, antipsychotics and muscle relaxants can cause side effects that include dry mouth. Leading to bad breath
As you can see the list is vast and we don’t expect you to necessarily be able to identify the cause of bad breath yourself!
