If your teeth do not have enough surface area to hold a crown in place, a crown lengthening procedure may be necessary.

It can also be performed for cosmetic reasons if you want to reduce the amount of your gum tissue seen when you smile.

What is the crown lengthening process?

Your dentist will perform the common surgical procedure to pull the gum tissue away from the surface area of your teeth, exposing more tooth above the gum line. In more involved cases, it may be necessary to reshape some areas of the jawbone.

How long does the procedure take?

The actual treatment can be done in as little as an hour, but the length of time will depend on the nuances of each particular situation and the number of teeth being redressed. It may take up to three months to complete the required aftercare, but you should be able to resume normal mouth functions after the first several days following the procedure.
